As of 2026-08-23, the single best first move for a student is still the GitHub Student Developer Pack — it's genuinely free, verifies via uploaded documents (no institutional email required, which matters for Indian colleges), and bundles free Copilot, the full JetBrains IDE lineup, Azure/MongoDB credits, a free year of 1Password, and dozens more. Figma, Framer, and JetBrains also hand out real free tiers with no institution-side gatekeeping.

Watch for discount-vs-free confusion: Microsoft 365 (50% off), Le Chat (60% off), and Replit (50% off) are paid plans at a reduced price, not free access, and several once-free perks have lapsed outright: Cursor's free year of Pro and DigitalOcean's $200 GitHub Pack credit, which was retroactively killed — it expired every Pack credit on August 1, 2026, including balances already redeemed months earlier on a stated 12-month term.

Read "free for a year" in this list as free until the vendor changes its mind, and the newest example is the opposite case: Google quietly relaunched a free-year AI offer on 2026-08-19, four days before this check, after having killed the old one in late 2025.

Verification is the other India-specific snag: Notion and Le Chat require an institutional email domain most Indian colleges don't issue with no document fallback, while GitHub, JetBrains, and Framer accept uploaded student ID or enrollment paperwork instead.
