A mathematician just accused OpenAI of pressuring him over credit for a math proof. Tristan Buckmaster and Levent Alpoge, who works at Anthropic, used AI models to solve three finite time blowup problems: porous media, Boussinesq, and 3D Euler. Real progress, built on work by Diego Cordoba and Luis Martinez-Zoroa. Then Buckmaster says OpenAI's Sebastien Bubeck told him an internal model had already solved a related Navier-Stokes problem alone. On the call, that story fell apart.
It was a whole team, working for days, after word of Buckmaster's progress leaked. Bubeck allegedly wanted Alpoge dropped from the paper for working at Anthropic. Buckmaster refused and published the whole exchange. Nobody has solved the actual million dollar Navier-Stokes problem. Not even close.
