Google just reshuffled the top of its AI organization, and it's not because anything's wrong. Demis Hassabis is stepping back as CEO of Google DeepMind, moving to Chair of DeepMind and Chief Scientist of Alphabet. Koray Kavukcuoglu, DeepMind's CTO for thirteen years, steps up to SVP, now reporting straight to Sundar Pichai. And Jeff Dean, one of Google's most influential engineers for twenty seven years, is leaving entirely to launch an independent AI research company with Sanjay Ghemawat. This is happening from strength, Gemini has over nine hundred fifty million monthly users. But handing the whole Gemini org to one person who reports directly to the CEO is a real bet on speed. The next two Gemini releases will show whether this was about focus, or about needing it.
