Netflix just shut down Night School Studio, the team behind Oxenfree. Four weeks ago, Netflix's own co-CEO told investors that Night School's newest game was one of the two most successful cloud game debuts the company had ever had. That game shipped in early July. Six weeks later, the studio is gone. Helsinki studio Moonloot is closing too, and it never shipped anything at all. Netflix says it is narrowing down to kids games, party games, and titles with mainstream hooks, mostly built by outside partners. Night School was the very first studio Netflix ever bought, back in twenty twenty one. Now the in house column is almost empty. Netflix isn't leaving games. It's leaving game development.
