OpenAI just walked away from Cursor. This morning, OpenAI announced it's winding down the contract that let developers pick GPT models inside Cursor's editor. The reason isn't quality. It's ownership. SpaceX closed its sixty billion dollar buyout of Cursor back on August 14th. And SpaceX also owns xAI, the company building Grok, which competes head on with GPT. So OpenAI's models were flowing straight into a rival's product. This isn't new behavior either. Anthropic already cut off Windsurf when OpenAI was trying to buy it, and cut off xAI after its engineers routed requests through Cursor. Model access used to be just an API bill. Now it's starting to look like a loyalty test, and acquisitions are the trigger that ends it.
