Hours after Tesla put driverless Cybercabs on the streets of Austin, federal regulators opened an investigation. This car has no steering wheel, no brake pedal, nothing. Tesla self-certified it as fully compliant with federal safety rules that assume a human driver exists. NHTSA wants to see the paperwork behind that claim. This isn't new territory. Amazon's Zoox went through the exact same audit back in twenty twenty two, and it took four years, plus a full fleet recall, before Zoox got the green light. Tesla is betting NHTSA moves faster this time. The federal rule that would actually clear a wheel-less car for the road hasn't even been finalized yet. Tesla launched anyway, riders already in the seats, which makes the whole thing much harder to unwind.
