Helium spent years paying people to plug in Wi-Fi hotspots for crypto rewards. On September first, it started selling something different: the software that runs a phone company. HeliumOS is a full billing and operations platform for carriers, MVNOs, and venue operators, built right on top of Helium's decentralized wireless network. Back in June, Helium sold off its own phone brand, Helium Mobile, to a company called Noble Mobile. That looked like a retreat. It wasn't.
Noble Mobile's parent company, Affiniti Ventures, is now HeliumOS's first customer, running its carrier business on the same platform Helium just built for everyone else. It's the same move Filecoin and Render are making: stop selling raw capacity, start selling the software layer that turns that capacity into a real business.
