OpenAI just shipped the first AI model it has ever labeled Critical risk for cybersecurity. A day later, it announced a billion dollars to defend against tools just like it. The program is called Daybreak for Frontline Defenders, aimed at organizations that can't afford a security team: water utilities, electric grids, small banks, local governments, and open source maintainers. Access splits into two tiers. Daybreak Blue covers routine defensive work, log review, triage, patching. Daybreak Red hands vetted organizations the same specialized models used to hunt exploits. Thousands of defenders across two thousand approved organizations are already using it, tied into a new pilot with the multi state information sharing center. The credits have to be spent within six months.
