Tailwind CSS just got bought by Shopify, and the story behind it says a lot about what AI is doing to open source. Back in January, Tailwind Labs laid off seventy five percent of its engineers. Founder Adam Wathan called it the brutal impact AI has had on the business. Here's the paradox. Tailwind's installs roughly tripled, but revenue fell about eighty percent, because developers stopped reading Tailwind's docs.

They just ask an LLM to write the code, so nobody ever saw the ads for Tailwind's paid products. Shopify is stepping in to give the team a stable home. Tailwind CSS itself stays MIT licensed and free. Tailwind Plus and ui dot sh, though, are closed to new signups for good. Usage went up. The money didn't follow.
