Meta's Ray-Ban smart glasses have a new rule: cover the recording light while the camera is rolling, and the camera stops rolling too. The company confirmed the software update on August 27, 2026, and it is the second time in under two months that Meta has had to patch how the glasses handle their one visible privacy signal.

Except that was never quite true. The original software only verified the LED was uncovered at the moment recording began. Once filming was underway, nothing checked it again, so a wearer could start a video with the light plainly visible, then slide a finger or a piece of tape over it and keep filming with no outward sign anything was happening.

That gap turned into a small industry fast. Sellers marketed stickers and clip-on covers built to blind the LED without blocking the lens, and tutorials circulated widely enough that at least one developer built an app just to detect nearby smart glasses by their Bluetooth signature. Meta says most businesses selling LED-defeating accessories have since shut down, though that's hard to verify independently, and the demand that created them hasn't gone anywhere.
How Meta got here
This is not Meta's first attempt at this category of problem, and the sequencing matters. Why has Meta had to fix this twice?
Because each fix only closes the specific workaround it was built for, and wearers keep finding the next one. Drill out the LED, lose the camera. Fine, cover it instead. Himel put the new behavior plainly: "the camera will now stop working if the light is covered during a recording," a real fix, and quietly an admission of how narrow the July patch was. He has also said only a small minority of users try to defeat the indicator, but the volume of tutorials, sellers and now a dedicated detection app suggests otherwise. What does this mean for bystander privacy?
The update fixes a real gap, but it doesn't touch the argument European regulators have been making for months: that the LED was never a sufficient consent mechanism to begin with. France's CNIL said in June that indicator lights "have only a limited range and therefore appear insufficient," noting that European law generally requires a bystander's actual consent, not just a passive light they may never notice. Germany's Hamburg data protection authority has raised similar concerns about the glasses running afoul of concealed-recording rules, and the EU's Data Protection Board has a broader report on smart glasses due by the end of summer 2026. None of that scrutiny is about software bugs. It's about whether a tiny light, working exactly as intended, is an adequate stand-in for someone's actual say over being recorded.
What to watch
- A third patch is likely. Two fixes in two months is a pattern, not a coincidence, and whatever workaround emerges next (opaque cases, IR blockers, sensor spoofing) will probably get its own update rather than a redesign.
- Regulatory pressure moves from guidance to rules. The EDPB's report is the one to watch. If it recommends binding standards for wearable-camera indicators, Meta and every competitor selling camera glasses in Europe will need to respond, not just react.
- Rivals will use this as a selling point. Expect Google, Samsung and Snap to frame their own indicator designs as more tamper-resistant when they talk about smart glasses privacy, whether or not the underlying hardware is actually different.
- Hardware, not software, is the real fix. With more than seven million Ray-Ban Meta pairs already sold, Meta can't retrofit the optics on units already in the wild. Software patches are the only lever it has left for that installed base.
Our take
Two fixes in eight weeks is the tell here, not the update itself. Meta is treating a hardware and design problem as if it were a software bug. To be fair, some of it genuinely is: checking the LED continuously instead of once at start is a straightforward, sensible change that should have shipped from day one. But no amount of clever polling changes the physical fact that the entire privacy guarantee rests on one small light anyone can block with a fingertip, for free, in under a second. That's a design decision Meta made when it built a camera into glasses meant to look like ordinary sunglasses, and no update resolves the tension between wanting the device to look invisible and wanting its recording to be obvious. The CNIL and EDPB are asking the right question by refusing to treat the LED as consent, because consent isn't something a manufacturer bolts on after the fact through firmware. Expect Meta to keep playing this exact game: patch the workaround people are actually using, wait for the next one, patch that too. It's a defensible strategy for a company that's already sold millions of units it can't recall. It is not the same thing as solving the problem.
