AMD put out two new desktop chips today: the Ryzen 5 5500F, a Zen 3 part that still runs on the four-year-old AM4 socket and takes cheap DDR4, and the Ryzen 5 7500, a Zen 4 chip for the newer AM5 platform with integrated graphics. Neither is fast in an absolute sense. What makes them worth writing about is timing: both launch straight into a memory market where DDR4 and DDR5 prices have roughly quadrupled since spring, and AMD is explicitly positioning the pair as a way to build a PC without paying that tax twice.

What exactly did AMD announce?

Two SKUs, aimed at opposite ends of AMD's current desktop lineup. The 5500F revives a Zen 3 chip that has technically existed since 2022, but reissues it with a slightly higher 4.4GHz boost clock (up from 4.2GHz on the plain 5500) and a bundled cooler at a price under £90. It's a pure value play for anyone still on AM4, a socket AMD has now kept alive for the better part of five years across four CPU generations.

The 7500 is the more interesting of the two. AMD already sells a Ryzen 5 7500F, a graphics-less AM5 chip that's been around since July at roughly $179. This new plain "7500," no F, adds back the RDNA2 integrated graphics block the F-suffix chips strip out, a real option for anyone who wants an AM5 machine without buying a discrete GPU on day one. It launches at £167.99, inside striking distance of the 5500F on price while sitting on the newer, DDR5-only platform.

Why launch a Zen 3 chip in 2026?

Because AM4 refuses to die. The socket first shipped in 2016 and AMD has now stretched it across four CPU generations, longer than almost any mainstream platform in PC history. Every AM4 board already on the market, and every DDR4 kit sitting on a shelf at last year's prices, becomes usable again the moment AMD ships a new chip for the socket. The Club386 reviewer who got early hands-on time put it plainly: with DDR5 prices "jetting off into silly land," AMD is leaning back into a platform it already knows people can build cheaply.

Does the pricing actually make sense?

Mostly, with one exception. The 7500 lands at £167.99, more than the £149.99 AMD's existing Ryzen 5 7600X currently sells for, a chip with a higher 5.3GHz boost clock and stronger single-core performance. Paying more for the slower part only makes sense if the built-in graphics matter enough to skip a discrete GPU on day one, which for a genuine budget build sometimes does. But it's an odd shelf to stock, and it leaves the 7500 needing a narrow buyer rather than being a clean upgrade over anything AMD already sells.

How bad has RAM pricing actually gotten?

Bad enough that it's reshaping which chips make sense to launch. A 32GB DDR4 kit that retailed for around $50 roughly six months ago is now crossing $200 at some retailers, a jump that has nothing to do with CPU performance and everything to do with fab capacity being redirected toward AI accelerator memory. DDR5 has moved on a similar trajectory. That squeeze is the same one behind the broader DRAM and NAND shortage that's been pushing up prices on everything from laptops to game consoles this year, and it's specifically why a chip that still works with older, cheaper memory has become a selling point again instead of a compromise.

Who should actually buy either chip?

The 5500F is the easy call. Anyone building a budget gaming PC around a mid-range GPU, or upgrading an old AM4 board sitting on a Ryzen 2000 or 3000 chip, gets a real clock-speed bump, a free cooler, and DDR4 pricing that's painful but still a fraction of DDR5's. The 7500 is narrower: it only beats the 7500F if a buyer genuinely wants integrated graphics on AM5 and will pay a premium over the 7600X for it. Anyone already planning a discrete GPU is better off with the 7600X outright, which makes the 7500 mostly a stopgap for people building in stages, CPU and board now, GPU later.

What it means for the DRAM market

This isn't AMD fixing memory prices, it's AMD routing around them. The chipmakers that actually set DRAM pricing, Samsung, SK Hynix and Micron, are the ones whose capacity decisions matter, and none has signalled a near-term reversal; most of their fab investment is chasing HBM demand for AI accelerators, not commodity DDR4 or DDR5. What this signals for investors is narrower but real: chipmakers with a cheaper path around expensive memory have an edge right now, and Intel, lacking an equivalent to AM4's back-catalog, doesn't have the same lever. Watch whether Intel answers with aggressive clearance pricing on older Alder Lake or Raptor Lake stock instead, since that's the more likely counter-move.

What to watch
  • US pricing. AMD has only confirmed UK figures so far; where the 5500F and 7500 land in dollars decides how competitive both really are against existing stock.
  • DDR4 supply. A revived Zen 3 chip only helps if DDR4 kits stay purchasable. If DDR4 output keeps getting deprioritized for DDR5 and HBM, this could be one of the last AM4 launches.
  • Intel's response. Without a socket with AM4's reach, expect clearance pricing on older Intel stock rather than a direct equivalent.
  • Whether AMD retires the 7500F. Selling a cheaper graphics-less 7500F alongside a pricier 7500 with graphics reads like a temporary shelf, not a permanent one.

Our take

The 5500F is the chip that actually matters here. It's a straightforward, honest answer to a real problem: DDR5 got expensive fast, and AM4 with DDR4 is still sitting there, cheap and available, for anyone AMD is willing to keep selling chips to. Reviving Zen 3 in late 2026 sounds backward until you look at what a DDR4 kit costs against a DDR5 kit right now, and then it looks like the more rational build.

The 7500 is harder to defend. Pricing it above the faster 7600X is the kind of decision that only makes sense on a spreadsheet where "has integrated graphics" outweighs "is slower and costs more," and for most builders it won't. If AMD wants the 7500 to actually sell, the DDR5 tax it's dodging on the 5500F side needs to show up as a real discount on the 7500's price too, not just a marketing line about giving budget builders options.
